Moxibustion
Moxibustion: Warming the Body & Healing from Within
Moxibustion is an ancient practice rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) that uses the warming properties of dried mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris) to stimulate acupuncture points and promote healing. This soothing technique helps harmonize the body’s energy (Qi), dispel cold, and support overall health. If you’re curious about how to use moxibustion at home, read on for a step-by-step guide!
What is Moxibustion?
Moxibustion, often called "moxa," involves burning dried mugwort near the skin to create gentle, therapeutic heat. This practice is used to enhance circulation, relieve pain, and strengthen the body’s natural defenses. You’ll be using an indirect moxa stick, a safe and effective method that allows you to apply warmth directly to specific areas without touching the skin.
Benefits of Moxibustion
In TCM, moxibustion is used to “tonify” the body, particularly for conditions related to cold and deficiency. When Qi (energy) and Yang (warming energy) are deficient, the body may feel cold, fatigued, or weak. Moxibustion helps restore warmth and movement, nourishing the Qi and strengthening the body's Yang. It’s often used for conditions like:
Immune Support
Chronic fatigue
Cold hands and feet
Menstrual cramps or irregular periods
Joint pain and arthritis
Digestive issues and weak digestion
How To Use Moxibustion At Home
You’ll be using an indirect moxa stick, which is easy to use and safe when following these instructions:
Materials Needed:
An indirect moxa stick
A lighter or match for lighting the moxa stick
A bowl of water for extinguishing the moxa safely
An ashtray or non-flammable plate for resting the moxa stick if needed
Instructions:
Find a Comfortable Space: Choose a well-ventilated area where you can sit or lie down comfortably. Make sure you have everything within reach.
Light the Moxa Stick: Hold the moxa stick over a flame until it glows red and starts to emit smoke. It should look like the end of a burning cigar.
Apply Heat to the Acupuncture Point: Hold the lit end of the moxa stick about 1-2 inches away from your skin, over the acupuncture point recommended during your session (e.g., lower abdomen, lower back, or a specific point on your leg). You should feel a warm, gentle heat—never burning or uncomfortable. Move the stick in small circles or hover it over the point for 10-15 minutes.
Monitor the Temperature: Keep the stick moving slightly to avoid overheating any single area. The goal is a steady, comfortable warmth.
Finish Up: When done, extinguish the moxa stick by dipping the burning end into the bowl of water. Let it sit until fully extinguished. Alternatively, place the stick in an ashtray to cool down, making sure it’s completely out before storing it.
Safety Tips for Moxibustion at Home
Avoid Direct Contact: Keep the moxa stick at least 1-2 inches from your skin at all times to prevent burns.
Never Leave Moxa Unattended: Always monitor the moxa stick while it’s lit, and never leave it burning unattended.
Ventilate the Room: Moxa produces smoke, so ensure your space is well-ventilated.
Avoid Sensitive Areas: Do not use moxa on open wounds, broken skin, or sensitive areas like the face.
